Fiji's Labour Party wants military commander's contract extended

There's been a call in the Fiji parliament for the military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama's contract to be extended when it expires early next year.

The Fiji Times reports that the call has come from the Labour Party MP, Poseci Bune.

Mr Bune says Commodore Bainimarama should stay in office because he is doing a good job prosecuting all those involved in the 2000 coup and mutinies.

He says true reconciliation cannot be achieved until all those involved in the upheaval of 2000 are brought to justice.

Mr Bune says Commodore Bainimarama's contract should be extended for the sake of future stability.

Earlier reports had said that the government had told the military commander that his contract would not be renewed.
