Power back on in Honiara

5:17 am on 8 May 2003

The General manager of the Solomon Islands Electricity Authority, Mike Nation, says they have begun reconnecting power supply to government departments after a significant payment from the government.

The Authority this week shut off the power to Government departments and agencies including the Water Authority, because the public bodies owe it around one million US dollars.

Mr Nation says the outstanding debt meant the Authority couldn't meet its fuel costs.

But he says this afternoon the Government cleared its current monthly account, which he says should be enough for the Authority to avoid any further embargoes on fuel.

Mr Nation says substantial arrears remain to be cleared by the Government but the money they received today should be enough to keep the Authority operating, at least for the next month.
