Citizens group in Fiji wants attorney general to resign

10:38 am on 25 April 2003

The Citizens Constitutional Forum of Fiji has accused the attorney general, Qoriniasi Bale, of interfering in the due process of law and has called on him to resign.

The Fiji Sun newspaper says the CCF has accused Mr Bale of telling the director of public prosecutions not to lay serious coup-related charges against the vice president, Ratu Jope Seniloli.

Ratu Jope was sworn in as president immediately after the May 2000 coup and proceeded to swear in George Speight's failed administration.

The Sun says the accusations have been made by the CCF's executive director, the Rev Akuila Yabaki, in a letter to Mr Bale.

The Rev Yabaki says while the attorney general is consulted on the appointment of the director of public prosecutions, it does not give him the power to tell the DPP who he can or cannot prosecute.

The Rev Yabaki has also accused the attorney general of giving unsolicited legal advice to the president to reduce the sentences and quash the convictions of soldiers sent to prison for mutiny.

He says Mr Bale's advice to the president is not only wrong in law, but also unethical.

The Rev Yabaki has accused Mr Bale of interfering in many areas where he has no power to and has called on him to resign.

Mr Bale is reported to be planning legal action against the CCF which was de-registered by the Qarase administration nearly two years ago.
