Fiji GCC chairman urges government to adopt fair policies

7:14 am on 9 April 2003

The chairman of Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs has urged the Qarase government to ensure its policies are fair, ethical and inclusive.

Fiji TV reports that Ratu Epeli Ganilau made the call at the annual convention of the Fiji Teachers Union.

Ratu Epeli said the state has a moral obligation to treat all citizens fairly and equitably, regardless of race, colour and creed.

He said there are just as many disadvantaged indigenous Fijians as there are Indo-Fijians and members of other communities.

Ratu Epeli questioned government policies on education, saying they compromise the values and ethics of hard and honest work.

He warned that preferential treatment in education could well perpetuate substandard and mediocre achievement.

The chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs called for a sensible analysis and review of current exclusive policies, which he says, could exacerbate imbalances and disparities.
