Samoa to end replacing defaced bank notes

4:27 pm on 4 April 2003

Samoa's Central Bank says it will only replace damaged bank notes until the end of the month.

The bank says from May the 1st the bank will no longer reimburse people for damaged or defaced notes, which means that it will be the responsibility of individuals to ensure that notes they have are of good quality.

The bank policy has raised questions about how to define damaged notes.

Last year, the Central Bank gave away wallets in a bid to get the public to stop folding notes.
