Demobilisation of Solomon's special constables to be restarted on Malaita

5:52 am on 31 March 2003

The demobilisation of Solomon Islands special police constables will be restarted on Malaita tomorrow, two months after the process was suspended because of Sir Frederick Soaki's assassination.

Sir Frederick, who was a peace counciller and former police commissioner, was shot dead in a restaurant in Auki.

A regular police sergeant has been charged over the killing, but police have yet to establish whether the shooting was related to the demobilisation.

The demobilising continued on other islands and so far around 7-hundred of a targetted 812 special constables have been taken off the police pay roll.
