Fiji UN soldiers withdrawn from Iraq

7:20 am on 19 March 2003

Fiji soldiers serving with the United Nations in Iraq are among those being evacuated from Baghdad ahead of the expiry of a 48-hour ultimatum by President George Bush.

They are being moved to Oman.

Fiji troops serving with the UN in Kuwait have also been pulled out and moved to Bangladesh.

But more than 200 of the 15-hundred Fijian soldiers serving with various units of the British army have taken up positions in Kuwait ahead of an attack on Iraq by US-led coalition forces.
