The Fiji Law Society says it will submit to the Legal Professional Committee that the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Ratu Rakuita Vakalabure be disbarred for life.
Graham Leung, a council member for the Law Society says that Ratu Rakuita should be disbarred for his being sworn in as Attorney General in George Speight's failed administration after the May 2000 coup.
His comments come after the Law Society's accused Ratu Rakuita of failing to uphold the rule of law and professional misconduct during a disciplinary hearing.
Mr Leung, who was the Law Society's prosecuting lawyer, says Ratu Rakuita should not have assumed the role of Attorney General while the incumbent, Anand Singh, was being held hostage.
He says Ratu Rakuita's actions amounted to sedition and treason and should be punished accordingly.
"..Well the Law Society. has made it very clear in terms of the paper it's filed, and in terms of the arguments, that it is seeking a disbarment. Its a matter for the committee's discretion and under the Legal Practitioners Act, it has a range of sanctions of: one, the ultimate of course which includes disbarment, but there could be lesser penalties preferred such as suspension, censure, reprimand."
Graham Leung says the Professional Committee will not reach a decision until the end of the year.
Ratu Rakuita says that his action was in the public interest and if he had done something wrong, the Law Society should have told him then, not now.
