Talonoa talks between Qarase and Chaudhry discontinued

5:32 pm on 9 December 2002

The informal talanoa or dialogue sessions between Fiji's prime minister Laisenia Qarase and the Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, have been discontinued.

Radio Fiji reports that according to Mr Qarase, the talks, which were initiated by Dr Sitiveni Halapua of the East West Centre in Hawaii are unlikely to resume.

The two leaders have had a series of informal discussions to try to resolve issues such as the expiring land leases and changes to the constitution being sought by the SDL government.

But Mr Qarase says the talks have been discontinued unilaterally by Mr Chaudhry who has every right to make up his own mind.

Mr Qarase says the government will now find other options to deal with the issues.
