A permanent memorial is being dedicated on Kiribati today to a group of 22 Commonwealth coastwatchers killed Japanese forces during the Second World War.

The victims included 17 New Zealanders and two Australians.

The Australia Veterans Affairs Minister, Danna Vale says the memorial honours the sacrifices made by those who played a crucial role in the fight for freedom and a democratic lifestyle.

Ms Vale says the Australian government had funded new memorials at a number of World War II sites in Papua New Guinea, including Milne Bay, Buna and Gona.
