Tuvalu gets money to upgrade Maritime Training Institute

The Asian Development Bank has approved an assistance package worth more than two million US dollars to upgrade a maritime institute of vital importance to Tuvalu's economy.

The money will enable the Tuvalu Maritime Training Institute to meet International Maritime Organisation training standards.

The Institute trains young Tuvaluan sailors so that they can work abroad on foreign vessels.

Annual remittances sent home by Tuvalu's seafarers amounts to more than four million US dollars ...a significant sum when set against the country's gross domestic product of ten million dollars
