Fiji's NFP wants Lautoka municipal election declared null and void

Fiji's National Federation Party has called on the local government minister to declare last weekend's municipal elections in the city of Lautoka null and void.

The Daily Post reports that the party has made the call because it says the poll did not meet the criteria for city council elections.

The NFP's Lautoka branch president, Faiaz Ali, says while Lautoka has 45-thousand ratepayers, only 16-thousand were registered in the rolls and from these only 3,500 voted.

Mr Ali says city council elections need a voter turnout of 10 percent but in Lautoka the figure was well below that, which is a breach of the Local Government Act.

Mr Ali says a survey by NFP shows that a large number of Lautoka citizens were not able to vote because despite being registered their names did not appear on the final roll.
