Chief Justice under fire for comment on cabinet case

4:05 pm on 30 August 2002

Fiji's chief justice, Daniel Fatiaki, is facing scathing criticism for his comment that he does not consider the composition of the cabinet case urgent.

The chairman of the NGO Coalition for Human Rights, the Reverend Akuila Yabaki, says the comment only confirms the grounds on which the coalition had objected to Justice Fatiaki's appointment.

The Reverend Yabaki says this was a political appointment made without the agreement of the opposition leader to serve the SDL govenrment's purpose to undermine the constitution.

Meanwhile, prominent Suva lawyer, Richard Naidu says there is no difficulty in assembling a panel of senior overseas judges for the Supreme court.

He says it is not a matter of priorities but of having the will to get it done.

The Fiji Times says in an editorial that Justice Fatiaki's comment is preposterous and the people of Fiji need to know quickly whether they have a legal government.
