Solomons PM repeats call for guns to be surrendered

4:07 pm on 8 July 2002

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Sir Allen Kemakeza, has again appealed for Solomon Islanders to return illegally held weapons.

The Prime Minister, speaking during Independence Day celebrations, says people need dialogue not guns to settle differences.

He says Solomon Islanders have seen the destruction the weapons have caused to the country.

Sir Allen says those still holding the illegal guns must return them to the authorities for the sake of the nation, and help the Government in its efforts to rebuild the country.

He says the ethnic conflict and self interest has resulted in the soaring cost of living, the high cost of medicines and unemployment.
