"It's been a lifelong experience for me - and I'm still learning."
Dr Karen Grylls talks with RNZ Concert about choral conducting as she prepares to take Voices New Zealand overseas - her final tour as its Music Director.
Grylls founded Voices New Zealand in 1998, after she had been leading the New Zealand Youth Choir for nearly a decade.
"It was some very vocal altos, actually, who said to me one day: 'What are we going to do when we leave Youth Choir? We love to sing in our regional choirs, but... we need something else, Karen.'"
"In those days, there was just a manager and me, and we said OK, let's invent a group!"
