So if you want to secure your country's choral future, that's where you need to begin.
And that explains why Elise Bradley directs childrens choirs, that and the fact she reckons she's a born teacher.
Bradley, who is artistic director of the New Zealand Children’s Choral Academy, spoke with RNZ Concert's Bryan Crump ahead a Matariki concert featuring members of the academy at St Matthews in the City, Auckland, this Sunday.
She explained why she set up the academy (because singing was no longer being taught in many primary schools) along with her plans to extend its reach beyond New Zealand's biggest city.
Bradley also recalled some of her experiences as director of the Toronto Childrens Chorus.
