These days China seems to be overflowing with young and talented classical musicians, especially pianists.
Hong Xu remembers a time (in the early 1990s) when pianos were rare - that's when he took up the instrument.
These days he travels frequently between southern China and New Zealand, and is the artistic director of the New Zealand International Piano Festival which Auckland University is hosting this month.
He spoke to RNZ Concert about the festival and its aim to foster excellence, not just in performance but teaching as well.
