Dunedin Professor and leading New Zealand Classical Composer, Anthony Ritchie declares the winner of the annual award for orchestral composition, which aims to nurture local composers residing in Otago or Southland.

It’s not everyday a young composer like Grace Shaw will be paid for their work and have it performed by the Dunedin Youth Orchestra.

Professor and Head of the School of Performing Arts at University of Otago Anthony Ritchie, founded the unique Composition prize in 2011 with the aim of elevating youth composition.

Anthony talked with Bryan Crump about the 13th year of the annual competition, overcoming illness and Symphony No 6. Which will premiere with the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra on September 23.

Announcing Viola player Grace Shaw as the winner of the prize for her composition, The Southern Alps Overture. A work Ritchie called expansive, grand and folk like!
