Natalie Murray Beale is a conductor, but these days she can also put acting coach down on her resumé.

It was Natalie who taught Cate Blanchett how to wield the baton when she played the role of the conductor Tár, in the 2022 hit movie of the same name.

This month Natalie is conducting NZ Opera’s latest production - Mozart’s relationship drama, Così fan tutte

RNZ Concert's Bryan Crump spoke with the Australian-born conductor about teaching Cate Blanchett how to direct an orchestra and about the unique position she occupies when conducting an opera performance: only the conductor can see both the stage and the orchestra.

"It's a very special place," says Natalie. "It's my favourite place in the world."

"There's a huge responsibility that comes with it. I love leading a performance that involves musicians and singers more than anything."
