Shiyeon Sung makes her debut as the new Principal Guest Conductor for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in City of Dreams, a concert with a Viennese twist.
She talks with Bryan Crump about what inspired her to take up conducting, and her strategy to win over an orchestra.
"Some people win the orchestra with a smile, some people with skill... I learned a very classical way of conducting, the German tradition - don't talk too much, just show them. And that is my strategy to win the orchestra, because you have to show everything, you have to show your emotions before you talk to the people. You have to convince them with your hands and gestures and your presence."
"I've dedicated my life to music. If everything went well [at the end of the concert] and everyone is happy, this is the most beautiful and happiest moment for me."
