I’ll Hum the First Few Bars

On 3 December 2015, Orchestra Wellington made history with a new work by David Long.

I’ll Hum the First Few Bars is the country’s first-ever work for orchestra and mechatronics – robots, in short – accompanied by composer David Long on electric guitar and David Downes’ mesmeric visuals. Here, Charlotte Wilson talks to David Long about the genesis of the work, his film composing, dance, his obsession with string things, and the bands he’s been in from the Muttonbirds on.
