Composer Ernst Toch was born in Vienna on 7 December 1887, the son of a Jewish leather dealer. He studied music in Frankfurt, taught in Mannheim, and fled Germany in 1933 when the National Socialists seized power. He settled in California, via Paris, London and New York, and made his living writing music for Hollywood film productions. In his sixties he wrote his first symphony, and wrote seven in total before his death in 1964. His Third Symphony won him the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1956.
