Polish composer Henryk Górecki died on Friday 12 November 2010 in a hospital in Katowice, Poland. Born in Czernica in the southern Polish region of Silesia, he made the area his home for essentially all his life, studying and teaching at the Academy of Music in Katowice.

His reputation as a composer was largely obscure until a 1992 release of his Symphony No 3, Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, which he had written in 1975. That recording on Nonesuch Records has sold over 1 million copies, and on release it stayed at the top of the US classical charts for 38 weeks. That very recording will be played tomorrow at 2:00pm on Radio New Zealand Concert, as part of Afternoon Requests.
