Brotherly harmonies

From Pick and Mix

Sol3 Mio is a trio put together by tenor brothers, Pene and Amitai Pati and their baritone cousin, Moses Mackay. The trio was originally put together to fund their classical voice studies but a record deal from Universal Music made this musical family into global stars.

One of the most famous families in French Classical music today, are violinist Renaud Capuçon and cellist Gautier Capuçon. Each has their own solo career, but the brothers take the chance to work together whenever they can.

Trio Dhoore are made up of brothers Koen, Hartwin and Ward, who play hurdy-gurdy, accordion and guitar. The brothers have been creating modern versions of Flemish folk tunes for twenty years, and still love to break all the rules.

Darlingside is a four-piece folk band from Boston whose voices blend so well you’d think they were brothers: they are totally unrelated. They started the band while at college. The name comes from a favourite quote of their teacher that sometimes in song writing you might have to “kill your darlings” if a line or riff upsets the arc of a song.

Katona Twins are a guitar duo made up of identical twins Peter and Zoltán, who trained as classical solo players but decided to perform together because two guitars are better than one. They play both classical and popular music, doing arrangements of everything from Mozart and Scarlatti, to the Beatles and Queen; we hear some of their Piazzolla CD, ‘Le Grand Tango’.

Famous local brothers Tim Finn and Neil Finn have made a lot of music together over the years, sometimes with their offspring. Earlier this year Neil brought together family and friends for the APO concert ‘Out of Silence’, featuring Crowded House and Split Enz songs arranged for Orchestra. Love of music unites several generations of Finns with orchestral players who have grown up with their songs.
