A prickly character, Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968) was often involved in feuds and falling out with his friends. This setting of the De profundis (Psalm 130) arose from one such occasion with the composer Gian Francesco Malipiero. Malipiero announced the rift between the two in a pamphlet which ended with these words: “Here endeth a friendship that started well but finished badly … de profundis clamavi.”

When the relationship was restored in 1937, both composers set this text and dedicated it to the other.

This beautiful piece brings the Tudor Consort's concert to a peaceful and hopeful conclusion.

Recorded 29 August 2019 in Wellington Cathedral of St. Paul
