Performed by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Vincent Hardaker
Stealing Tutunui was commissioned by Symphony Australia in 2000 for the New Voices composer development program in Perth, and premiered by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
It’s a programmatic depiction of the Maori legend about a chief, Tinirau and his pet whale, the eponymous Tutunui, who is stolen and killed by a duplicitous priest.
The upshot is that Tinirau and his wife track the priest down and exact their revenge.
