Wellington composer, Glen Downie was the NZSO National Youth Orchestra's composer-in-residence in 2019.

In 2014, he wrote a piece called Kaleidoscopic Train. That was for orchestra only and now he’s developed it further with the addition of choir for light speckled droplet.

He descibes the piece like this ... “[The first part] is very free-floating, with no solid sense of metre, but little points of colour rebounding and reflecting off each other. The second part is more lyrical and the choir slowly takes over.”

The choir is used, not as a conveyor of a text with meaning, but as a colour – they sing only vowel sounds.
