Andrew Joyce (cello) with The Tudor Consort directed by Michael Stewart

Jocelyn Morlock’s ‘Exaudi’ was commissioned by Vancouver’s ‘Musica Intima’ vocal ensemble and was premièred by them with cellist Steven Isserlis in May 2004.

The cello part provides a rhapsodic strand against the insistently rhythmic choral writing.

“Exaudi is an expression of grief and the many stages one goes through when grieving”, says Morlock. “The music moves us from an inability to comprehend our loss to passionate cries of anguish, to acceptance and angelic reassurance.”

The beautiful final section features three soprano soloists echoing notes of the cello line, providing a kind of halo and extra resonance to the sound.
