From Reformation to Syncopation
500 years since the Reformation is marked this week at the BBC Proms.
The Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists will perform psalm settings by JS Bach’s predecessor Heinrich Schütz, as well as Lutheran cantatas from Bach himself. John Eliot Gardiner (author of the book Music in the Castle of Heaven about his love of Bach’s music) is at the helm.
And 450 years of Monteverdi himself is noted by the French ensemble Pygmalion making its Proms debut under Raphaël Pichon. Pygmalion takes on Monteverdi’s iconic Vespers of 1610.
Friday brings us a joint centenary celebration of jazz legends singer Ella Fitzgerald and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie - both of whom were born 100 years ago this year.
