NZ Junior Piano Competition 2020

The Final round of the 2020 New Zealand Junior Piano Competition was held on 4 October 2020 in the Lewis Eady Showroom.

The competition is administered by the Lewis Eady Charitable Trust and is open to New Zealand resident pianists at Secondary School or younger.

The previous winners are Delvan Lin (2014), Lixin Zhang (2016), and Ashani Waidyatillake (2018).

This year, 40 young pianists submitted a video audition for consideration. From these, 16 were selected to perform in the semi-final rounds. They are required to play a 20-minute recital of mixed repertoire including a movement from a classical sonata and a New Zealand composition.

The adjudicator was Richard Mapp and he then selected seven to perform in the final.

The Artistic Director of the competition Rae de Lisle writes: “The 16 who qualified for this year’s competition represent the best of New Zealand’s young pianistic talent. They have survived the frustrations of online lessons and have continued to surprise and impress with their resilience and determination, whatever the difficulties. These young pianists still want to achieve, to do their best, and to lift their game. The music they bring you is not without cost. They have put in countless hours already, and their ambition is not lessened by lockdown.”

The winner of the competition was Otis Prescott-Mason.
