Five Spice Roasted Fresh Figs

Ingredients

  • 12 lge fresh figs or 18 smaller figs
  • ¾ C shaved palm sugar
  • ½ tsp Chinese five spice
  • zest and juice of 1 orange
  • 4 whole star anise
  • 1 cinnamon quill, broken into 2 pieces
  • 1 tsp whole cloves

Method

Preheat the oven to 200°C.

Trim and cut a deep cross at the stem end of each fig. Combine the palm sugar, five spice and orange zest and sprinkle over the fruit. Pour over the orange juice. Poke the remaining spices in among the figs.

Roast until tinged golden brown and hot (approximately 15 minutes). Remove the whole spices before serving if you wish. Serve with vanilla ice-cream or marscapone or with Asian-style puddings such as almond jelly and warmed soy milk custard.
