Watch: Evacuated residents check on stock

10:18 am on 11 February 2019

Civil Defence is "actively working" on a plan to get residents back into Wakefield after making progress on managing the bush fires.

Firefighters are optimistic they may finally be able to bring the fire in the Tasman district under control today.

Nelson-Tasman Civil Defence area controller Roger Ball said there had been some outstanding work done.

"Due to the good progress we are actively working on a plan for the re-entry into the Wakefield township. We will let residents know when it is safe to do so and under what conditions.

In the meantime, Wakefield residents can only go through the town in escorted convoys.

RNZ's Conan Young joined one of the convoys on Sunday and found the priority for many was getting to stock to make sure they had enough water and feed.
