Widescreen's Dan Slevin chats to Kiwi screen legend Tem Morrison and screen debutant Akuhata ('Augs') Keefe about their new film, Mahana.
Adapted from Witi Ihimaera's novel Bulibasha, Mahana is directed by Lee Tamahori who has returned to make his first film in New Zealand after 20 successful years in Hollywood.
Mahana tells the story of two Maori sheep-shearing families on the East Coast in the 1960s, the Mahanas and the Poatas, who are long-standing enemies and business rivals.
Simeon Mahana, 14, is the youngest son and clashes with his traditionalist grandfather, Tamihana, played by Morrison. Simeon starts to unravel the truth behind the vendetta between the two families and risks not just his own future prospects but the cohesion of the entire tight-knit society.
