Christchurch Town Hall reopens

From Christchurch Dilemmas, 4:40 pm on 21 February 2019

As the Christchurch Town Hall underwent a $167 million refurbishment, the building’s original architects would pop in, to look over the works.

Maurice Mahoney made his last site visit just weeks before his death in October, last year.

Now, Sir Miles Warren, aged 90, has returned to see inside the completed auditorium - for four decades a venue regarded worldwide as the birthplace of modern-day music hall acoustics.

Online current affairs series, Frank, filmed as Sir Miles took in the fully restored auditorium, with memories of concerts, beauty pageants, and live television spectaculars.

This weekend, thousands of Cantabrians will once again flock to this beloved building, and Mayor Lianne Dalziel is bubbling over at the prospect of cutting the ribbon on a national treasure, which central Government wanted to demolish and Christchurch’s City Council voted to keep.

RNZ Concert will broadcast the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra's first performance in the refurbished Town Hall live-to-air from 7:30pm on Saturday 2 March 2019.
