A car has ploughed into a group of cyclists in Italy, killing eight of them and injuring four others including the driver.

The driver was overtaking on a two-lane road near Lamezia Terme in the southern region of Calabria when he hit the oncoming cyclists, the BBC quotes officials as saying.

Italian police have arrested the driver, a Moroccan national.

The Ansa news agency says he is being held under police guard in hospital on suspicion of manslaughter, according to the Ansa news agency.

Visibility and driving conditions were reportedly good at the time. A police spokesman has said the driver tested positive for cannabis.

Ansa said the group of Sunday-morning cyclists was affiliated with a gym in Lamezia Terme.
