Pope Benedict has made some of his strongest comments yet on the scandals involving paedophile priests in the Catholic Church.
During a visit to Portugal, the Pope said the Church has to acknowledge the terrifying truth, that the greatest threat it faces came from sin within the church, the BBC reports.
He told journalists that forgiveness could not be a substitute for justice.
The Pope was beginning his four-day visit with an open-air mass in Lisbon before an anticipated 160,000 people.
