An historic natural landmark in Canberra was damaged in a storm that hit the capital on Saturday afternoon.
The Lone Pine tree at the Australian War Memorial has been split in two by what appears to be a lightning strike.
The ABC reports the tree was planted in 1934 after a soldier sent a pine cone home to his mother during the Gallipoli campaign and she propagated it into a seedling.
War memorial spokeswoman Marylou Pooley says tree surgeons will be on site on Monday to try to save the pine.
