Student in Finland kills three, wounds dozens

9:56 pm on 23 September 2008

Police in Finland fear three students may be dead, and dozens wounded, after a male student opened fire at a college in the west of the country on Tuesday.

They say the student has killed himself.

A BBC correspondent in Finland says a gunman dressed in black was seen at the school, in the town of Kauhajoki, apparently carrying an automatic weapon.

In November last year, a student shot dead eight people at another Finnish school, in Tuusula.

The level of gun ownership in Finland is among the highest in the world.
