A welfare support group in Auckland says a proposed government policy to ban an abusive parent from living or working with children is not the answer.
Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says the proposal is being discussed as part of the Government's white paper on vulnerable children that is still being developed.
An independent support group, Tu Wahine, which works with troubled families to improve whanau dynamics is opposed to the idea.
The kaiwhakahaere (strategic development manager) Ngaroimata Reid says the Government's missed out a key step, which would be to talk with organisations like itself.
She says families go round and round in circles seeking help from government agencies before a child is taken away.
Ms Reid says those families aren't being given the adequate support they need.
