Julian Dean, the only New Zealander riding the Tour de France, has been pipped for stage honours on the fourth full day of the tour.
Dean was outsprinted at the end of the 153-kilometre stage by the Italian Alessandro Petacchi, at the head of a bunch of 30 riders all credited with the same time as the winner.
It was Petacchi's second stage win after the sprinter, making his first appearance on the Tour in more than five years, won in Brussels on Monday.
Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara retains the race leader's yellow jersey, 23 seconds ahead of the Welshman Geraint Thomas with another 16 seconds back to the Australian Cadel Evans in third place.
