Fire crews monitor Otago wildfire site

Firefighting crews will spend several more days keeping watch at the scene of large tussock and scrub fire in inland Otago to make sure it's out.

The fire began near Hyde in the Maniototo district on Friday when a permitted burn-off burned out of control.

It burned through 1500 hectares, including more than 70ha of plantation forest, before being contained.

Dunedin's Principal Rural Fire Officer, Graeme Still, says although ground conditions were wet, the vegetation was dry after weeks of heavy frosts sucked the moisture out of it.

He says there are still hot-spots to extinguish.
