The East Asia summit has ended in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi with New Zealand Prime Minister John Key calling it a very productive meeting.
Mr Key says economic matters were the main theme.
He says it was encouraging that all 16 member states spoke of wanting to make progress on a Free Trade Agreement.
Mr Key says such agreements take a long time to negotiate, but he would hope it could be done in a matter of years, not decades.
The United States and Russia confirmed they will join the East Asia summit, saying their respective leaders will attend next year.
Sixteen countries are part of the East Asia summit - the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations plus China, India, Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
