The company developing part of the Auckland city waterfront says the first stage of the upgrade will be ready for the Rugby World Cup.

Altogether, $120 million is being spent to revitalise the waterfront from Westhaven to Mechanics Bay.

The chief executive of the council-owned Waterfront Auckland company. John Dalzell, says North Wharf will be a working waterfront where Auckland's maritime history will be acknowledged.

Mr Dalzell says there will be a park, restaurants and two trams will be in operation.

He says the area known as the Rugby World Cup fan zone, on Queens Wharf, is also near completion.

Mr Dalzell says the construction site looks a bit chaotic at the moment but he is confident the bulk of work will finished in mid-July and the tram tracks will be finished in early August.
