Power bills are going up. Two major companies have announced rises in residential tariffs.
Mercury Energy says prices for residential customers in Auckland are increasing by an average 3.5% from 1 April.
The rise will affect 250,000 customers.
Mercury says the increase is driven by the need for continuing investment, with demand for energy set to rise by 75% in the next 40 years.
Contact Energy customers in parts of Auckland, Northland, Kapiti, Manawatu, the Thames Valley, Tasman and Invercargill face price rises of up to 75 from 1 March.
Earlier this week, Contact announced increases for North Canterbury, Wigram, the Far North and Taupo.
It blames the rise on increasing costs of electricity generation.
