A fund set up by the Government to protect nature on private land has bought 42 hectares of forest land in eastern Wairarapa for more than $100,000.
The Nature Heritage Fund has purchased Pati Tapu Bush, about 14km kilometres from Alfredton, just above Flatbush road, from farmers Bruce and Sue McKenzie.
Fund manager Allan McKenzie says the forest will be managed by the Department of Conservation.
He says the purchase protects a sample of forestry land of the past. It
includes matai, rimu, miro and totara.
