Waka Nathan blindsided by RWC ambassador role

6:32 am on 10 November 2010

Maori All Black great Waka Nathan says that being named as a 2011 Rugby World Cup ambassador came as a surprise.

Being asked to fill the spot created by Andy Haden's resignation came out of the blue, he says.

The 70-year-old was never in a losing side in the 14 times he pulled on the All Black jersey.

He was a standout loose forward in the powerhouse Auckland team of the 1960s, and later served as selector and manager of the Maori team.

He told Waatea News that he is particularly looking forward to encouraging younger kids into rugby.
