Police urged to take pharmacy break-ins more seriously

An Auckland pharmacist who struggled with an intruder who ended up dying at his Mt Albert store wants the police to take pharmacy break-ins more seriously.

Grant Gillard was confronted by an intruder while checking the premises of his pharmacy after an alarm was activated early on Tuesday morning.

With previous break-ins, Mr Gillard says, police have taken up to two days to respond, by which time much of the evidence had been lost.

He says he would like it to be mandatory for police to attend pharmacy burglaries as quickly as possible.
