A man appeared in the Napier District Court on Friday charged with the sexual violation of a 13-year-old girl in her own home.
Detective Sergeant Emmet Lynch says a house in the suburb of Maraenui was broken into late on Wednesday night while the family of four was asleep.
The intruder walked through the house before going into the girl's bedroom and assaulting her. He ran away after her father woke up and challenged him.
Following information provided by members of the public, a man, 37, was arrested late on Thursday.
Facing three charges of sexual violation and one of burglary, he has been remanded in custody for a month.
