No decision yet on Hillary tribute

The Geographic Board says the issue of whether to name a land feature after Sir Edmund Hillary will be considered later this year.

It is two years since Sir Edmund's death in Auckland at the age of 88.

The board says as a mark of respect, it always waits a minimum of two years after the death of a person before looking at naming features after them.

It will be considering seven proposals.

However, a proposal to rename the entire Southern Alps has been rejected.

Secretary Wendy Shaw says the board's final selection is likely to be made this year, and the public and the Hillary family will have an opportunity to comment.
