There is diesel for several kilometres on the southbound lane of State Highway Two over the Rimutaka Hill.
Police say the spillage starts half way up the hill on the Featherston side and continues over the summit and towards the Hutt Valley.
Extreme caution is advised and contractors are on their way to lay grit.
